What is coaching?

How long does it take?

It depends on what you want to achieve.

I typically suggest a minimum commitment of six or eight sessions. Scientifically speaking it takes more than two months (66 days on average) before a new behavior becomes automatic. Identifying and then doing the work to create lasting habits is a cornerstone to making lasting change. All that being said, we can agree to a total number of sessions in advance or have a more open-ended arrangement. And honestly, I’m here. If we get to a destination and another one pops up a few months later, we jump back in and tackle that one.

Coaching is a process. Both the journey and the destination are important and have inherent value. Ultimately this is about what you want to invest in yourself.

Coaching versus therapy or counseling?

Coaching is not therapy but can be therapeutic. A coach looks at your present to help you create the future you desire, while a therapist looks at your past to help you manage your present. Coaching is more goal- and action-oriented, and therapy is more insight-oriented. And while therapy might be a lifelong part of your mental health, coaching tends to be more short-term — or at least each instance of coaching tends to be short-term (you can always come back for more!)

As is true with therapy emotions are welcome and helpful but with coaching, we approach them, reflect on them, and use them differently.

If I feel that you would benefit from therapy instead of coaching, or more likely in addition to coaching, I’ll be honest about it.

Are our conversations confidential?

Yes. I will not disclose that you are my client or anything about our sessions unless I feel there is a risk to someone’s safety or you are breaking the law.
